Christmas Concert Luthers Bach Ensemble

Christmas concert Luthers Bach Ensemble

Vivaldi’s Gloria in D major is a beautifully serene composition that could be compared to other famous sacred works such as the  Stabat Mater by Pergolesi,  Allegri’s Miserere and Mozart’s Ave Verum. It is comprised of twelve parts. The choral passages are interspersed with soli for soprano and counter tenor. The opening fanfare resembles the Gloria in the Hohe Messe by Johann Sebastian Bach, who was Vivaldi's contemporary and his  great admirer. After the opening fanfare the choir sings a joyful Gloria in Excelsis Deo followed by the equally beautiful Et in terra pax hominibus – peace on earth and goodwill to men – what could be more fitting for the Christmas season!

The great J.S. Bach
For Bach's new Advent cantata 'Schwingt freudig euch empor' he re-used the music he wrote for his Birthday cantata and substituted the birthday recitative by new choral arrangements based on the Advent chorales ‘Nun komm, der heiden Heiland’ and ‘Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern’. The result was a very festive Advent cantata. We will conclude our concert with some traditional Christmas songs that we all know and love: 'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' (Praetorius), 'O Jesulein Süss', 'In dulci jubilo' (Dietrich Buxtehude) e.a.
