Autumn Concert Programme: Tomás Luis de Victoria
On Friday 25 November Cappella Groningen will give a concert in the Aa Church. Under the baton of their former conductor Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel the Cappella Groningen will perform eight hymns from Hymni Totius Anni (Rome, 1581) by Tomás Luis de Victoria (circa 1548-1611).
Tomás Luis de Victoria ranks as one of the greatest Renaissance composers. However, not all of his compositions are equally popular. Victoria is best known for the pieces he composed for the Holy Week services, a number of motets and his requiem mass for six voices. Ancient texts and Gregorian melodies form the basis of Victoria’s polyphonic settings. For the sake of variety and contrast three psalms and a motet by the same composer will also be performed this evening.
A special feature of this concert is the participation of Haytham Safia. He will improvise between the choral pieces on the oud, an ancient stringed instrument. A unique programme exploring a lesser known aspect of Tomás Luis de Victoria.
Cappella Groningen was founded in 1989 and originated as the Groningse Bachvereniging. Capella Groningen aims to continue in the tradition of the Groningse Bachvereniging by performing predominantly Renaissance and Baroque music according to the latest insights on historically informed performance practice. The choir sings a capella or accompanied by professional instrumentalists and vocalists.
