An artist from New York
On Wednesday 6 September  New York born artist and musician Charlemagne Palestine will ascend the steps to the organ loft in the Aa Church and perform his  acclaimed Schlingen Blängen on the historic Schnitger organ. This piece is one of the classics of minimalist music. For an hour long Palestine will create powerful and overwhelmingly sonorous  organ sounds and combine them  with his unorthodox vocals.

Charlemagne Palestine
Charlemagne Palestine (1947) was born and raised  in Brooklyn, New York. He made a name as a musician, composer, film and video maker and visual artist. As a young man he sang in synagogues and played the carillon at the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, across the street from the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. These unorthodox performances were soon the talk of the town. Many artists came to hear him play again and again and he built up a network of contacts and friendships in the New York avant-garde art scene.

Musician and video and performance artist
Palestine started out as a musician and video and performance artist. He gradually combined these activities, including the legendary piece Schlingen Blängen, with making drawings and visuals. Charlemagne has always loved teddy bears and they continue to play an important role in his performances. He has created installations featuring his vast collection of teddy bears, some store-bought and some home-made. His teddy bear installation CHARLEWORLDDDD is on view at the Tschumi Pavillion in Groningen from 6 September.
