your Freedom, my Freedom
On Wednesday 4 May the choir of the 4 Mei-Projekt present a concert in the Aa Church. Freedom is the very relevant theme of this year’s concert, in which young actors from the youth theatre school VRIJDAG also have a role.
Since 1979 the choir of the 4 Mei-Projekt from Groningen has presented an annual series of concerts on or around the 4th of May that express its concern about current issues such as peace and social justice. The programme ‘your Freedom, my Freedom’ celebrates the fact that so many European countries have lived in peace and freedom for over seventy years, with the right to freedom of speech and opinion and democratic governance.
In pursuit of peace and freedom
Tonight in the Aa Church the 4 Mei-Projekt performs songs and contemporary compositions about the different ways people go in search of peace and freedom. The Haitian-American composer Sidney Guillaume wrote about slaves who found freedom in a new state after an uprising. A piece that was composed especially for the 4 Mei-Projekt is Feike van Tuinen’s Dona Nobis Pacem, about peace and freedom in Europe. And Russel Peterson wrote Being Peace with texts by Thich Nath Hanh about inner freedom, while the songs of Finish composer Aulis Sallinen tell of those who risk everything to take the dangerous journey across the sea in pursuit of a life in freedom.
The choir of the 4 Mei-Projekt is conducted by Pieter Kole and is accompanied by Olga Karelova (piano), Marion Valk (saxophone), Fiona van der Marel (flute), Tsjisse de Jong (percussion) and Kees Boomsma (baritone).
Youth theatre school
Young actors from the youth theatre school VRIJDAG will dramatize the dilemmas surrounding the theme of freedom in short recitations based on poems written by Marion Bloem, Ilja Pfeijffer and other poets. This production is directed by Hannah de Vries, sound and light is by Louwrens Ellens.
