Leoni Jansen is a television presenter, singer and stage-director. Her career in theatre began in the seventies and in the following years she hosted various television shows. On Sunday 7 May she will perform in concert at the church in Klein Wetsinge.
Guitar and cither
Most singers start out on their own with nothing but a stool and a guitar. Leoni Jansen has switched things around. After a series of joint ventures, the most recent one with eight South African singers, she will now perform solo, with a guitar and a cither.
Leoni has been on a tour of Dutch theatres as a singer for several seasons and has gained a faithful audience. She has earned praise for the leisurely and authentic way in which she combines her often personal stories with her Celtic/Americana song repertoire.
Jansen has directed several big multi-cultural theatre productions. In recent years she was responsible for Made in Holland, the music of Faranani (a tribute to Nelson Mandela in Carré) and shows by the African Mamas and The Daughters of Africa. She has also created programmes for young vocal talents such as She Got Game and Let’s do Her.
Coaching young vocalists
During the last few years Leoni has become a competent coach and director of young vocalists and bands who are finding their way in the entertainment world. She directed theatre shows that featured various pop groups, including Room Eleven, Karsu, Trinity and Sensual, and she coached on television for Rocknation and The Voice.
Leoni Jansen has performed alongside many world music musicians such as Busi Mhlongo, Toumani Diabate, Rosi Flores, Les Freres Guissés, Sibongile Khumalo, Mohammud Ahmed, Annie Grace, Karin Polwart, Kine Lam and Tshala Muana. She performed the famous song 7 Seconds with Yousou N’dour at the IDFA in Amsterdam.
