Masters&Apprentices under the baton of Sigvards Kļava (chief conductor and artistic director of the Latvian Radio Choir)
On Friday 24th February the Aa Church presents a unique concert: Masters&Apprentices is a project that offers young and talented singers an opportunity to perform an a capella programme alongside their experienced colleagues of the Netherlands Chamber Choir and Cappella Amsterdam.
Latvian master conductor Sigvards Kļava has put together an exciting and diverse programme for this year’s edition. The focus is on the Northern European choral tradition, with works by Finnish composer Einujohani Rautavaara, the Estonian Arvo Pärt, the Latvians Pēteris Vasks and Ēriks Ešenvalds and the Swede Sven-David Sandström.
What these compositions all have in common is their sophisticated balancing of ensemble and solo singing based on a predominantly harmonious, tonal musical technique. That is why the Fest- und Gedenksprϋche by Johannes Brahms fit in so well in this programma.
What young and ambitious singer with a passion for ensemble singing would not want the chance of getting some practical experience with a seasoned colleague? Twenty young singers, all of them students or recent graduates of Dutch conservatories, have been given this unique opportunity. The ‘apprentices’ and their ‘masters’ put into practice what Sigvards Kļava and a voice coach have taught them in the weeks preceding the concert. All the 'masters' are very experienced members of the Netherlands Chamber Choir and Cappella Amsterdam.
