The Night of Europe
After last year’s successful symposium members of the student society Diskursi present another ‘Night of…’ this year. On Thursday 26 May the Night of Europe will be held in the Aa Church, with lectures by prominent speakers on a variety of topics.
The Night of Europe
Do we want more or less Europe? Who belongs to Europe and who doesn’t? And what exactly is Europe? All very pertinent questions that don’t seem to have cut-and-dried answers. During A Night of Europe various activities will attempt to shed some light on the concept of ‘Europe’.
The main programme kicks off with a lecture by Professor Frank Ankersmit on sovereignty and democracy in the European Union, followed by Agnes Jongerius on the April 6 Ukraine referendum.
After these lectures an hour long programme of lectures on diverse subjects will be held on the vaults and in the tower of the church. A master class on the European Parliament is also offered. Alternatively, you could just sit and chat over a drink.
The programme continues with journalist Tomas Vanheste who will discuss shaping a European identity. Professor Dirk-Jan Wolffram concludes with a lecture on Groningen in a European perspective.
Diskursi was established as an intellectual student society affiliated with A.S.V. Dizkartes. Its goal is to facilitate discussions between students of various disciplines. It was inspired by the 18th century Felix Meritis Society in Amsterdam, a society that endorses the values of the Age of Enlightenment. The members of Diskursi are students at the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
Once a month Diskursi’s praesidium organise short lectures, discussions or drinks parties for its members at Dizkartes. Since 2015 Diskursi have organised an annual symposium on a field of science called ‘The Night of … ‘ in the Aa Church.
