Exhibition in Klein Wetsinge
From Saturday 27 August through Sunday 18 September paintings by Ben Rikken are on display at the church in Klein Wetsinge.
Landscapes and still lifes
Ben Rikken (1951) was born in Grevenbicht in Limburg. He is a graduate of the Minerva Art Academy and now lives and works in Groningen. Rikken mainly paints landscapes and still lifes that are characterized by warm, expressive colours and balanced compositions.
In his landscapes Rikken strives for a synthesis of light, colour and his own personal style. He studies the changing light by making several versions of the same subject at different times of day. Rikken’s style soon evolved in the tradition of the Belle Peinture, a style in which flecks of colour are applied in short, irregular brushstrokes. The paintings need to be viewed from a distance for the image to emerge. In his best works rough surfaces and bold brushstrokes are interspersed with smooth and light ones. The exhibit comprises works that were made during the last thirty years and consists predominantly of landscapes depicting France, Italy and Holland.
The church in Klein Wetsinge
The church in Klein Wetsinge is located halfway between the towns of Sauwerd and Winsum and has a panoramic view of the scenic Reitdiep area. The church was restored and completely refurbished by the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken in 2014. The church is open daily. On offer are an extensive lunch and drinks menu, including sandwiches, soups and salads. Visitors can climb upstairs to see the unique clockwork and to enjoy the views of the beautiful Reitdiep valley.
