The play of objects and people

An exhibition of paintings by Joost Doornik is on show from Saturday April 15 through Sunday 28 May at the church in Klein Wetsinge.

Joost Doornik (1962) works and lives in Groningen and graduated from the Minerva Art Academy in 1989. After graduation he often spent the summer months painting in France and Italy. His travels had a formative influence on Doornik as an artist. During the months spent in The Netherlands he honed his skills by painting café interiors.

The play of light on objects and people
About his work Doornik says: ‘As an artist you are able to create the images you want to surround yourself with. You can also make or recreate paintings that have been more or less forgotten or are no longer part of the present day painting repertoire, such as intimate dining-room or café interiors. The play of winter light in a room or the contrast of warm lamp light against cool daylight: these are the elements that make up my paintings. A fascinating pattern of objects and people, illuminated and captured in a transitory world. ‘

Doornik has exhibited at many important venues, such as the Kunsthal Rotterdam, De Buitenplaats Museum in Eelde and Galerie Wildevuur in Hooghalen. He ran his own gallery, Galerie Doornik&Schelfhout, from 2007 to 2016. Doornik works as a teacher at the Klassieke Akademie in Groningen.
