This year C.S.G. Gica Student’s Choir celebrates its 50th anniversary. The highlight of the jubilee year is a performance of G.F. Händel’s Messiah in the Aa Church. The choir will be joined by four soloists and a professional orchestra.
The C.S.G. Gica Student’s Choir was founded in 1965. Throughout this academic year the choir has celebrated its anniversary with various activities. The festivities culminate with a performance of Georg Friedrich Händel’s Messiah on June 25th in the Aa Church. Four soloists and the King George Consort will join the choir in this project. The King George Consort is an orchestra that was especially created for this performance of the Messiah. Soloists are Esther Ebbinge (soprano), Hanneke Tichelaar (alto), Daniël van Kessel (tenor) and Roele Kok (bass). Orchestra, soloists and choir will be conducted by David van Roijen, who is celebrating his fifth anniversary as the choir’s conductor.
The Messiah is a wonderful piece of music that took Händel only 24 days to compose, but singers, musicians and audiences have loved it for centuries, which makes it the perfect choice to round off the jubilee year. The Hallelujah chorus is probably the most well-known part of the Messiah, but though the rest may be less familiar it is no less glorious.
