A jazzy Sunday afternoon
The church in Klein Wetsinge will host a jazz concert featuring René van Astenrode, Bill Arensma and Bert van Erk on Sunday April 22nd at 3.30 in the afternoon. On the programme are numbers from the American songbook and compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim. A mix of swing and Latin.
René van Astenrode – vibraphone
René studied percussion at the Conservatory in Groningen and drums and vibraphone in The Hague. He held a post at the jazz department of the Conservatory in Groningen teaching methodology. Currently René works at the music schools in Haren, Gieten and Stadskanaal. He plays his own compositions on the vibraphone in the Good Vibes quartet and has toured France and Germany with various jazz groups. He also plays in Potbaumgarten and Friends, Vintage Five and Fens & Friends.
Bill Arensma – guitar
In his younger years jazz guitarist Bill Arensma was inspired by guitarists like Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Pat Martino. For many years he performed at important jazz venues like the Haarlem Jazz Club, the Bimhuis, the Melkweg, George’s Jazz Café and B 14. He has often performed at the Jazz Festival in Amsterfoort and at the Jazz Driedaagse in Haarlem. He prefers playing in a trio format, close to the audience and making the most of the interaction with his fellow musicians.
Bert van Erk – bass
Bert is a much sought after bass player thanks to his versatility, which he gained from years of experience playing with very diverse musicians. He is the co-founder of Geïmproviseerde Muziek Utrecht, a foundation for improvisational music. Bert also gives workshops for the Jazz in Groningen foundation, he provides a platform for conservatory students at the Alto Jazz Café in Groningen and organizes monthly concerts for trios.
The church in Klein Wetsinge
The church in Klein Wetsinge is located halfway between the towns of Sauwerd and Winsum and has a panoramic view of the scenic Reitdiep area. The church was restored and completely refurbished by the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken. Visitors are cordially welcomed by managers Nicolaas and Inez Geenen. On offer are an extensive lunch and drinks menu. Visitors may climb upstairs where they can admire the unique clockwork and enjoy the views of the beautiful Reitdiep valley.
