Sample the very best jenever and gin
You’re in for a surprise at the first ever Jenever & Gin Festival on Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th of June at the Aa Church in Groningen.
Dozens of kinds of gin and jenever will be waiting to be sampled: plain, in a mix or in a cocktail. Some of the world’s best bartenders will demonstrate the art of cocktail making. At the festival you will learn what role jenever plays in cocktail bars and where this typically Dutch drink gets its characteristic flavour. Find the pop-up speakeasy on the water. On Friday and Saturday evening there will also be an exclusive Chef’s Table with a Michelin starred chef. A festival filled with surprising discoveries!
About the festival
Long ago, when jenever was first made in The Netherlands, it was used for medicinal purposes only, but soon it was being enjoyed by everyone. Later the British adopted this custom and began distilling juniper berries. They only used neutral alcohol while jenever was made with malt wine. And that is how gin was created. We’re all familiar with gin and the good news is that jenever is growing in popularity again all over the globe. The Dutch national drink is almost 400 years old. Once the most popular drink in the world, now a revelation for aficionados.
A part of the Aa Church will be turned into a Michelin star restaurant. This special edition of Chef’s Table will be organized by Hooghoudt in collaboration with Michelin chef Steven Klein Nijenhuis of Herberg Onder de Linden in Aduard and Jeroen Sportel, chef and owner of Vive la Vie in Groningen, also recommended by the Michelin Guide. Steven and Jeroen will select the best ingredients and combinations for a four-course dinner with an important role for jenever.
The Jenever & Gin Festival is part of Groninginnedag; a homecoming day for anyone who has ever lived in Groningen. Besides the Jenever & Gin Festival in the Aa Church there will also be a beer festival at the Ossenmarkt, and you'll be able to camp on the Grote Markt.
