Christmas in Contrast
A unique concert in the Aa Church on Friday 23rd December! Organists Euwe and Sybolt de Jong (Ensemble dejongdejongplus) will perform on the church’s famous Schnitger organ. They will be joined by two vocal quartets, a saxophone, a viola and various harmoniums.
Brothers Euwe and Sybolt de Jong have formed an organ duo since they were students at the conservatory in Groningen. Their rendition of cantatas by J.S. Bach arranged for organ duets has earned praise at home and abroad. The ensemble dejongdejongplus was formed in 2010 and has recorded three CDs. Their first album (Folk Song) met with great critical acclaim and was called the second best CD production of 2011 by music reviewer Job van Schaik (‘mesmerizing folk songs’).
What makes this concert in the Aa Church so unique is the choir: not a static choir on a stage but one that sings while walking around. Choral music interspersed with the melancholy sound of a single soprano off stage. With two vocal quartets, a viola, a sax and various harmoniums the music of dejongdejongplus will spill out of every nook and cranny of the age-old church.
The two vocal quartets were formed especially for this concert. The two talented young sopranos are both students at the Conservatory in Utrecht. The men (alt, tenor, baritone, bass) are members of the vocal ensemble The Gents. Five of the eight men were once members of the Roden Boys Choir.
Spicing up the choir are Elsbeth de Jong on viola and Jack Westra on sax. Euwe and Sybolt de Jong will perform on a number of harmoniums of various sizes as well as, of course, the famous Schnitger organ.
The music you will hear this evening was composed or arranged especially for this space and the available voices.
Admission: € 20,-.
Tickets available via the website Dejongdejong and at the door on the evening of the concert.
