Christmas Eve Concert

In keeping with the tradition the Roden Boys Choir will once again present a Festival of Lessons and Carols in the Aa Church on Christmas Eve: nine Advent and Christmas readings from the Bible interspersed with traditional and contemporary Christmas carols.

The tradition was first started eighty years ago by the Choir of King's College in Cambridge. More than twenty years ago the Roden Boys Choir introduced this Christmas tradition in the Netherlands. The concert is held by candlelight, just as it is in Cambridge, the boys are dressed in traditional Anglican choir gowns and sometimes the audience is invited to sing along to the carols and hymns.

The Roden Boys Choir
The Roden Boys Choir was modelled after the English cathedral choir and its repertoire features Anglican choral music in its broadest sense. The choir’s director is Rintje te Wies, who is also the artistic director of the Stichting Koorschool Noord Nederland. The Roden Boys Choir has earned acclaim for its consistently English choral style, not just in terms of size and range, but also for the high quality of the individual voices of the boys and young men. In recent years the boys have participated in many major choral and orchestral productions, such as the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach, the War Requiem, the Saint Nicolas Cantata and the Spring Symphony by Benjamin Britten and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3.

King’s College Choir
The Roden Boys Choir is carrying on a tradition that began eighty years ago in Cambridge by the Choir of King’s College. This choir is the most famous representative of the age-old and much loved English choral tradition. It dates back to the fifteenth century when King Henry VI established a boys choir to provide music for the daily church services. Over the years much has changed, but during the academic year the boys still sing at daily chapel services.
