A Boxing Day Walk and Festive Concert
For the fifth year in a row the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken, the foundation for historic churches in Groningen, has organised a Christmas walk through the centre of Groningen on Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day).
A stroll through the centre of town
The programme starts with a short introduction in the Remonstrant Church followed by a walk with a knowledgeable guide through the town centre of Groningen. The afternoon concludes with a short Christmas concert in the Remonstrant Church.
The theme this year is Believing in the Secret – Clandestine Churches in Groningen. The introduction prior to the walk will be presented by historian Anja Groenveld-Smid, who has recently published a walking guidebook on this subject.
The main focus of the walk will be on the (obsolete) clandestine churches but for those who are interested there will be a lot to discover and everyone can soak up the atmosphere. The guides have immersed themselves in this fascinating and lesser known period of Groningen’s history and will share their knowledge during the walk.
The walk will be followed by a Christmas concert by the Music School (VRIJDAG) Baroque Ensemble, Recorder Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble conducted by Jankees Braaksma. The programme includes works by Schein, Torelli, Praetorius, Pärt and Lauridsen. It is possible to attend the concert without first going on the walking tour.
