St. Matthew Passion
On Saturday, 7 March the Luthers Bach Ensemble will perform the St. Matthew Passion in the Der Aa-kerk.
Of course Bach did not compose the St. Matthew Passion as an opera, but both the text and music contain many operatic elements. The Luthers Bach Ensemble is presenting a semi-staged version of the Passion, under the direction of Jos Visscher. The staging is plain and simple, so as not to distract the audience from the musical experience. The costumes, with their subtle accessories and colour accents, allude to the nature of the characters portrayed.
In recent years director Jos Visscher has focused on writing and directing music theatre projects. With his theatre company De Lege Ruimte and in collaboration with orchestrator Jan Misdom, the artistic director of Het Kamermuziekparadijs in Tynaarlo and the woodwind ensemble Misdom Consort, he created four short, comic chamber operas, so-called opera buffas.
