Arp Schnitger had a workshop in Hamburg, but he and his apprentices also worked in other places, such as Groningen. Of the many organs Arp Schnitger built in Groningen only three remain today. The organ in the Der Aa-kerk was originally built for the Academy church in the Broerstraat. In 1815 it was moved to the Aa-church as a gift from King William I. Today it is considered to be one of the most important organs in northern Europe. After a thorough restoration its inaugural concert took place in October 2011.
