Heritage Day/Open Monumentendag

Visit our monumental venues

On Heritage Day (Open Monumentendag), Saturday 10 September, four of our monumental venues are open to the public.

Would you like to see the interiors of some of the unique historic buildings in the centre of Groningen? On Saturday 10 September the  Aa-church and the Remonstrant church open their doors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some unique buildings in nearby towns are also open to the public, such as the churches in Klein Wetsinge and in Leegkerk.

Icons and symbols

The theme of this year’s Heritage Day is Icons and symbols, with the focus on images and symbols that have a unique extra quality. Of course, in churches these are everywhere, both inside and out, for example in ornaments and paintings. But a church also has an iconic value for the town and landscape in which it stands.

Lie down in the Aa church

Come to the Aa Church if you would like to see the interior of a church from a different perspective. Visitors can lie on mats on the ground and view the unique paintings on the vaulted ceiling using binoculars. And of course the significanceof these paintings will be explained to you. You can also take an extensive guided tour of the church and the vaults.

The church in Leegkerk

Guided tours will be given in and around the church in Leegkerk, which is located on the western edge of Groningen. There will be a variety of activities for children and you can enjoy coffee and cake served by our volunteer staff.

Remonstrant church: contemporary and classical

In the Remonstrant church on Coehoornsingel visitors can look around the modern church hall that was designed by Japanese architect Moriko Kira. The elegant meeting rooms with their classic interiors and the verger’s house are open for everyone. Guided tours explaining the history and present day use of the building will also be given here.

View of the Reitdiep area

The church in Klein Wetsinge is also open on Heritage Day. Located between the towns of Sauwerd and Winsum, it offers panoramic views of the scenic Reitdiep valley. Visitors will be cordially welcomed by managers Nicolaas and Inez Geenen.
