Heritage Day/Open Monumentendag

Visit our historic venues

On Heritage Day (Open Monumentendag), Saturday 9 September, four of our historic venues are open to the public.

Would you like to see the interiors of some of the unique historic buildings in the centre of Groningen? On Saturday, 9 September the  Aa-church and the Remonstrant church open their doors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And of course some unique buildings in nearby towns are also open to the public, such as the churches in Klein Wetsinge and in Leegkerk.

Farmers, citizens and countrymen
The theme of this year’s Heritage Day is Farmers, citizens and countrymen, with the focus on people and their mutual economic and cultural ties. The theme explores the bonds between people of town and country and those that lead a nomadic lifestyle and connects divergent historic periods to the present day.

Guided tours in the Aa church
The Aa Church takes its name from the river Aa,  an important waterway for skippers and merchants in days long ago. Nowadays the church serves a cultural and commercial purpose. Want to know more about the history of the Aa Church? Why not take a guided tour? There will be extensive guided tours of the church and the vaults.

The church in Leegkerk
Guided tours will be given in and around the church in Leegkerk, which is located on the western fringe of Groningen. Children can participate in a variety of activities while you enjoy the coffee and cake that our volenteer staff will be  serving.
The vocal ensemble Vocalo will give a performance at the church in Leegkerk from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The ensemble consists of fifteen enthusiastic singers, conducted by Wim Bos and accompanied on the piano by Moniek Timmer, for whom no musical challenge is too great. Vocalo’s concert programme features a perfect balance between works by classical composers (such as Bruckner, Schubert, Fauré and Jenkins) and modern pieces, for example by Queen and Charlotte Church, as well as Celtic music.

Remonstrant church: contemporary and classical
In the Remonstrant church on Coehoornsingel visitors can look around the modern church hall that was designed by Japanese architect Moriko Kira. The elegant meeting rooms with their classic interiors and the verger’s house are open for everyone. Guided tours explaining the history and present day use of the building will also be given here.

View of the Reitdiep area
The church in Klein Wetsinge is also open on Heritage Day. Located between the towns of Sauwerd and Winsum, it offers panoramic views of the scenic Reitdiep valley. Visitors will be cordially welcomed by managers Nicolaas and Inez Geenen.
