In the Catholic church vespers are part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Vespers is a sunset evening prayer, also referred to as evensong, in which a cappella vocal music alternates with organ music. The repetitive nature of the melodies, sung without pause or aiming at dramatic effect, creates a meditative almost mystical atmosphere which quiets the mind of the listener and encourages contemplation.
This evening Liuwe Tamming will perform liturgical organ music composed by Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) and alternately members of the Luthers Bach Ensemble choir, conducted by Luuk Dijkhuis, will sing Gregorian chants.
