A semi-staged production of the St. Matthew Passion, stage direction by Marc Pantus
Easter and the St. Matthew Passion have become almost synonymous in the Netherlands. On Sunday 18 March the Luthers Bach Ensemble will perform the St. Matthew Passion at the Aa Church.
Under the baton of Tymen Jan Bronda the Luthers Bach Ensemble has become a much acclaimed early music ensemble. This year the ensemble will present a dramatic semi-staged production of the St. Matthew Passion. Stage-management will be in the hands of bass-baritone Mark Pantus, who will also sing the role of Christ.
Nowhere in the world is Bach’s masterwork performed as often at Easter as it is in The Netherlands, and in so many diverse productions. The famous conductor Willem Mengelberg, who first performed it with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra back in 1899, and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging are responsible for turning the St. Matthew Passion into an annual tradition here. For several years the Luthers Bach Ensemble have combined the best of different worlds. This time it will not just be the characteristically powerful and historically informed production but also the stage direction that will transform this oratorio into a kind of semi-opera, making the tale of the crucifixion even more dramatic and compelling.
