Terug naar het Begin: Ellen Deckwitz

Ellen Deckwitz and Rense Sinkgraven - Vloeibare Woorden

On Saturday, 16 May the Terug naar het begin/Back to the Beginning festival starts. The synagogue in Appingedam presents a performance by Ellen Deckwitz and Rense Sinkgraven.

The festival Terug naar het begin is a mix of music, theatre, poetry, literature, dance and the visual arts. All performances take place in historic churches (and in this synagogue) in Appingedam and surroundings. The name of the festival refers to the earliest history of the Netherlands, which can best be seen in the historical town centre of Appingedam and surrounding countryside, where you can visit 12th and 13th century churches that cannot be found anywhere else in the Netherlands.

Ellen Deckwitz

Poet Ellen Deckwitz is considered one of the most important contemporary young poets and is a welcome guest at Lowlands and De Wereld Draait Door. During Terug naar het begin she will give a poetry reading in the synagogue and philosophize with Rense Sinkgraven on what ‘homo ludens’ (the festival’s theme this year) means to them. Ellen and Rense have known each other since she was a student in Groningen and he was the city’s poet laureate.

Rense Sinkgraven is the former poet laureate of Groningen. He studied philosophy at the University of Groningen. In 2005 he debuted with the book Bombloesem. In 2009 he published Sloop de stad met tedere woorden. Sinkgraven wrote the text for the title song on Frank Boeijen’s CD Genade which was released in 2011. His latest CD Een vermoeden van licht also features texts by Sinkgraven. All these poems were published in the book Liefde is voor de feestdagen.

The theme: ‘Homo ludens’ or ‘the playing man’’

Who dares take the road less travelled? Who is free to do what they like? Who creates new worlds and stimulates our imagination? Who will take us on an adventure? This year ‘Back to the Beginning’ goes in search of the playing man.

There are three performances:

12.30 p.m.

3.30 p.m.
