On Sunday afternoon, January 28th, the Cantatrix Vocal Ensemble will perform in concert at the Aa Church. Under the baton of guest director Krista Audere from Latvia and accompanied by Jan Bartlema on guitar they will present Romancero Gitano, an exciting choral work by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
Spanish poet and playwright
The poetic lyrics were written by Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936). A Spanish poet and playwright considered by many to be the greatest his country has ever brought forth. He was openly homosexual but was not allowed to be himself in his country. Because of his sympathy for the poor and destitute, his affinity with the heartbreaking poetry of their lives, he was executed during the Spanish Civil War. His books, including Romancero Gitano, were burned in public. His grave has never been found. Because of this Lorca became the most famous victim of Franco’s reign of terror and the mystery surrounding his death has never been solved.
Composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco
The composer is Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968). He too had a difficult life. He was born into a prominent Jewish family in Florence. In 1939 after the Italian Racial Laws were passed he fled to America with his family. He worked for some of the major Hollywoord film studios and composed the scores for over two hundred films. His name often remained unmentioned because of his Jewish origins.
