Organ concerts on Monday evenings
There is an organ concert in the Aa Church every Monday evening in July. This series of concerts on the famous Schnitger organ was organized by Peter Westerbrink, the titular organist at the Aa Church.
3 July – Arvid Gast
Tonight’s concert will be given by the eminent German organist Arvid Gast. Gast has an international reputation as a concert organist and juror. He is a professor of organ and religious music at the Musikhochschule in Lϋbeck and the titular organist at Lϋbeck’s St. Jakobikirche, famed for its historic organ. This versatile organist will perform works from the North German baroque period, by Johann Sebastian Bach and from the German Romantic period. Besides works by Dieterich Buxtehude and Georg Böhm he will play Bach’s Toccata in C BWV 564 and two Leipziger Choräle, and conclude with the impressive second Organ Sonata by August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885).
10 July – Henk de Vries
Henk de Vries is from Groningen and is the organist in Zuidbroek, Zeerijp and at the Martini Church at services held there for university students. He is internationally known as an organist and juror at competitions. His recital at the Aa Church is entitled Surrounded by Bach. Also on the programme are Mendelssohn’s Fourth Organ Sonata, César Franck’s famous Prelude, Fugue et Variation, Les Bergers by Olivier Messiaen and an improvisation – all present an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of the Aa church organ.
17 July – Peter Westerbrink
Peter Westerbrink has held the position of Aa Church organist for twenty-five years. His interpretation and knowledge of early Northern European organ music have earned him an international reputation as a performer, teacher and juror. His most recent project is a cd series in four volumes, Franz Tunder in perspectief, recorded on five different Schnitger organs. This evening he will perform works by German baroque composers: variations by Jakob Praetorius on Von allen Menschen abgewandt, toccatas by Matthias Weckman, Tunder’s Was kann uns kommen an fϋr Not framed by Vincent Lϋbeck’s Praeludium in C and one of the most impressive works composed by Dieterich Buxtehude, his Praeludium in E BuxWV 142.
24 July – Leonore Lub
Leonore Lub studied organ and piano at the conservatories in Groningen and Arnhem. Lub is the organist of the Arp Schnitger organ in the church at Noordbroek. Her discography includes recordings of the Aa Church, Noordbroek and Nieuw-Scheemda organs. With her colleague Erwin Wiersinga she recorded the complete organ works by Jehan Alain. Two organ works by Mendelssohn Bartholdy feature prominently on tonight’s programme: the vibrant Fourth Organ Sonata and a transcription of the Andante con moto from the Italian Symphony. The concert will open with Scheidemann’s lively Benedicam Dominum and an airy Concerto by Bach’s grandnephew Johann Gottfried Walther. An intimate Trio in D and one of Bach’s most famous works for organ, the Passacaglia in C BWV 581, will conclude the concert.
31 July – Thiemo Janssen
Organist Thiemo Janssen is coming to Groningen to give the final concert in this summer series in the Aa Church. Janssen is the organist of the famous Arp Schnitger organ in Norden, Germany. He will perform Mendelssohn’s second Organ Sonata. Also on the programme is a composition by Georg Böhm that reflects Galant influences. Thiemo Janssen will open the concert with Dieterich Buxtehude’s monumental Praeludium in E Bux WV 141 and the Ciacona in C BuxWV 160. This concert too will conclude with one of Bach’s most well-known pieces, the Praeludium und Fuge in d BWV 532.
